Chapter Business

Marc Pinotti kicked off the meeting by thanking our corporate sponsor Haystack Associates Inc. for the refreshments followed by Chapter Business including:

  • A recap of the Chapter Luncheon on May 22nd that featured Kirk C. Bailey from the University of Washington and John Howie from the Cloud Security Alliance.
  • A reminder to save the date for our next Chapter Luncheon on September 10th 2013 which will feature presentations from Chris Richter, Vice President of Security Services, Savvis a CenturyLink Company, and John Howie from CSA.
  • Our next Chapter Meeting is June 27th with presentations from Robert Block, Managing Director, Identity & Access Management at Fish Net and Gavin Hill, Director Product Marketing at Venafi.
  • Many thanks to our Chapter volunteers including Robert Bunge and his team for putting together our podcast interviews and Justin Brecese, Sean Chung, and Casey Rodgers for their work creating and running our Facebook and Google+ sites.

Meeting Presentations

Christopher Howard and Colin Folawn, Attorneys at Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt provided an engaging and informative presentation on best practices for the adoption and use of Cloud technologies from a legal perspective.  The presentation covered a synopsis of relevant case law around cloud computing; law firm issues, needs and requirements in adopting Cloud technologies; eDiscovery issues and data retention; and an extensive Q&A session on legal ‘best practices’.

Christopher Howard
Attorney, Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt

Christopher Howard focuses his practice on commercial litigation and the defense of professionals in the medical, legal, financial, hospitality and real estate industries. His representative work includes: defense of hospitals, physicians, dentists, psychologists, and nursing homes in medical malpractice claims and in licensure matters; defense of attorneys in legal malpractice claims; defense of hotels and restaurants in premises liability, product liability and alcohol service litigation; general defense of self-insured clients; litigation relating to internet commerce and general commercial litigation. Mr. Howard handles insurance coverage matters in the life and disability coverage areas, and advises on risk management for self-insured companies. He has extensive trial and appellate experience in state, federal and administrative law courts. He currently serves as the practice group leader for the firm’s general litigation group.  A frequent speaker to professionals and employers on liability, ethics, and risk management issues, Mr. Howard has been recognized by Washington Super Lawyers (2007-2012, 2001), an annual listing of outstanding lawyers who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement and; he was named to the Top 100 Washington Super Lawyers list (2010-2012). He also carries an “AV” rating with Martindale Hubbell. Prior to joining Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt in 2006, he served as a partner and Pacific Northwest Litigation Practice Group Leader in the Seattle office of Holland + Knight.

Colin Folawn
Attorney, Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt

Colin Folawn helps clients resolve disputes. He limits his practice to matters involving complex contract disputes, business torts, products liability, and legal malpractice/ethics. He assists clients with disputes at all stages, including pre-litigation negotiation, hearings, trials, and appeals. Mr. Folawn has presented briefing and oral argument before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as the Washington Court of Appeals. He has tried civil jury cases to verdict in Washington courts and written and argued several successful motions in state and federal courts.

Mr. Folawn has been recognized for inclusion in the list of Washington Rising Stars published by Thomson Reuters. Before becoming a shareholder at Schwabe, he received the 2009 Defense Associate of the Year Award from Washington Defense Trial Lawyers.

While studying at the Seattle University School of Law, Mr. Folawn won the Fredric C. Tausend appellate moot court competition. He served as a judicial extern for Justice Tom Chambers of the Washington Supreme Court. In addition, Mr. Folawn was editor in chief for the Seattle University Law Review. At graduation, he was one of two law students to receive the Faculty Scholar Award for 2003.

Mr. Folawn is a member of the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court. He served as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Lawyers Helping Hungry Children from 2008-2009.
